About Podiatric Surgery

Foot and ankle problems fall into the following categories:

  • Acquired from physical stress, small mechanical changes within the foot and improper footwear.
  • Traumatic foot problems, which are associated with foot and ankle injuries.
  • Arthritic foot problems, which typically involve one or more joints.
  • Neoplastic disorders, usually called tumors, which are the result of abnormal growth of tissue and may be benign or malignant.
  • Infectious foot problems, which are caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal organisms.
  • Congenital foot problems, which are generally inherited.

Podiatric Surgery is a field of medicine that strives to improve the overall health and well-being of patients by focusing on preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions associated with the foot and ankle. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) are specialists who practice on the lower extremities, primarily on feet and ankles. The education of podiatric surgeons includes three to four years of undergraduate education, four years in an accredited podiatric medical school, followed by a hospital-based residency program.
